The Compliance section in the License Management workspace provides the product-level compliance result for your managed software portfolio. It compares effective entitlement quantities with calculated license demand and displays the resulting balance and compliance status for each product.
Access via Workspaces > License Management > Compliance.
Compliance results depend on underlying entitlement data (typically derived from Purchases) and calculated software demand. The assigned license model and license metric determine how entitlement quantities are formed and used in compliance calculations.
The Compliance overview displays all products in a single list. Each row represents one product and its current calculated license position.

The list shows:
•Product icon
•Product
•License Model and Metric
•Entitled quantity
•Downgrade and Upgrade adjustments
•Demand
•Balance (ELP)
•Balance value (financial valuation)
•Status
The product icon column is the first visible column in the list and displays the logo or icon associated with the product. This provides a quick visual reference to identify products at a glance. The row expand control, which shows compliance allocations, is only displayed when at least one product in the current view has allocation records. When no allocations exist in the view, the expand control column is hidden to keep the grid clean and uncluttered.
Compliance Status
STATUS |
MEANING |
REQUIRED ACTION |
|---|---|---|
Compliant |
Available quantity covers calculated demand. A surplus up to the compliance threshold is still Compliant. |
Monitor regularly |
Over-licensed |
Available quantity exceeds calculated demand by more than the compliance threshold. License surplus present. |
Review Optimization for reclamation or reallocation |
Under-licensed |
Calculated demand exceeds available quantity, or required maintenance is not covered. License deficit present |
Immediate action: Verify entitlement data and review demand |
Compliance status color indicators
Each compliance status is shown as a color-coded badge in the Compliance list and on the Compliance Details page. The color provides an at-a-glance visual signal of the compliance position:
•Compliant: Teal badge. Indicates a balanced license position, including a surplus up to the compliance threshold. No immediate action is required.
•Over-licensed: Blue badge. Indicates a license surplus above the compliance threshold. Review the entitlement for optimization or reclamation opportunities.
•Under-licensed: Red badge. Indicates a license deficit or uncovered required maintenance. Immediate action is required to resolve the compliance risk.
|
WARNING An Under-licensed status represents an active compliance risk. Prioritize these products. |
Effective License Position (ELP)
The Balance column shows the Effective License Position for each product, calculated as:
Balance = Entitlement + Downgrade + Upgrade - Demand
•Positive balance: License surplus (cost optimization potential).
•Negative balance: License deficit (financial exposure).
•The Balance value column shows the financial valuation (currency inherited from the related purchase).
•Identify products with a maintenance shortfall, shown independently from the regular license balance.
Products with an active maintenance or subscription entitlement additionally have a Maintenance balance, calculated independently from the regular license Balance as Maintenance entitled + Maintenance downgrade + Maintenance upgrade − Maintenance demand. For products that require maintenance coverage for virtual devices, demand from virtual devices always consumes maintenance and can drive the Maintenance balance negative even when the regular license Balance is positive. Maintenance demand and Maintenance balance are shown on the Compliance Details page.

Available Actions
The toolbar provides the following actions: Refresh, Add, Edit, Remove, Search.
Product family grouping
The Compliance list supports a product family grouping mode. When grouping is enabled, compliances that belong to the same product family are displayed as a collapsible group, with the individual product compliance records shown as child rows beneath the product family name. This makes it easier to review compliance positions across related product versions at a glance.
Use the Show grouping button in the toolbar to switch to the grouped view. When grouping is active, click Remove grouping to return to the flat list view. The grouping state does not persist between sessions.
After selecting a product from the Compliance overview, the Details view provides deeper information about the selected compliance result.

The Details tab shows the selected product, its compliance status, license model, metric, license overview, and usage information. In this example, the product is under-licensed because the calculated demand exceeds the entitled quantity. Use this tab to understand the current license position of the product and to identify whether the product is compliant, under-licensed, or over-licensed.
The Purchases tab lists the purchases related to the selected compliance result. Use this tab to verify the purchase records that contribute to the entitlement data used in the compliance calculation.

The Related devices tab lists devices that contribute to the calculated demand for the selected product. Use this tab to review demand-relevant devices and to calculate or adjust demand data where required.
