Windows agent: WMI inventory fails with wminet_utils.dll error

Symptoms

The agent is installed and enrolled, but the first inventory operation fails. The agent log contains the following error:

System.PlatformNotSupportedException: The native library '...\wminet_utils.dll' does not have all required functions. Please, update the .NET Framework.

Cause

The Raynet One Windows agent runs on a bundled .NET 10 runtime, but its WMI-based inventory relies on System.Management, which loads native components from the .NET Framework installation present on the operating system. Specifically, it loads wminet_utils.dll from the installed .NET Framework at %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\. If the installed .NET Framework version is older than 4.7, this file does not expose the required API surface, causing the error above.

This issue occurs on operating systems that ship with .NET Framework 4.6.2 or earlier — for example, Windows Server 2016 (4.6.2 inbox) or Windows Server 2012 R2 (4.5.1 inbox) — when the .NET Framework has not been updated since the initial OS installation.

Resolution

Install .NET Framework 4.7 or later on the affected machine. Raynet recommends installing version 4.8 or 4.8.1, which are the latest available releases.

1.Confirm that the installed .NET Framework version is below 4.7 by checking the following registry value on the affected machine:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v4\Full\Release

A value lower than 460798 (or an absent key) confirms the issue.

2.Download and install the .NET Framework 4.8 offline installer from the Microsoft Download Center. A system reboot may be required after installation.

3.After the reboot, confirm the registry value is now 528040 or higher (corresponding to .NET Framework 4.8).

4.Restart the Raynet One agent service. The WMI inventory will now complete successfully.

tip

Tip:
For large-scale deployments, the .NET Framework upgrade can be distributed via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM/SCCM), or Microsoft Intune before rolling out the agent. See Supported platforms for the full OS prerequisite matrix.
