A fingerprint is a single software signature that identifies a software installed on the machine. It should contain at least product name, version, and (if possible) manufacturer.
Examples for types of fingerprints:
•Add/Remove Programs from Windows Registry (32- / 64Bit)
•Windows Installer (MSI) information
•System-related information (WINAPI)
•SWIDTag file in formation (industry norm, in use by only a few publishers)
•File header information (executables)
Fingerprints are classified by type, allowing fingerprints to be qualified and ranked.
